Concept of independent life of disabled people
It is generally known that Russian disabled people face discrimination of various kinds. Parasitic attitude and dependence, passivity and inferiority complex are oftener peculiar to them. Often they have a low education level and low qualification. Many of them are representatives of the poorest strata of population.
An active involvement of such people into the life pf society is the most effective and democratic way to improve their standing. The first step to it is promoting the formation of an independent and self-supporting style of life of disabled people.
Independent life is an opportunity to determine and choose by oneself such a way of life that would allow to make decisions on one’s own and freely manage circumstances in different life situations;
Independent life is a human right to be an integral part to the modern society and to have a freedom of choice by taking actively part in social, economic and political processes;
Independent life is an opportunity to have the right of full participation in the processes of medical and social rehabilitation and to be a head expert in assessment of their quality;
Independent life is a human right to have a free access to housing and milieu, social infrastructure and transport, work and education, medical aid and social services;
Independent life is everything that enables a disabled person to consider himself a Personality and be an independent person.
